Life was rugged and such inventions as our Wonder Shredder, also known as a kitchen grater or cheese grater, quickly became a household item as message of its existence spread throughout the Wild West. Lucky for you, you may consider yourself amongst the chosen few who will know what is was like in the old fashioned days when shredders became a part of almost every meal preparation plan. It was a favorite tool from those who worked in saloons to folks who made a living down in the coal mines. Our grater became popular at a time when a dime a day was considered a respectable salary for a hard day’s work. Way back in 1819, nearly 200 years ago, Jacob Bromwell, inventor, was the only pioneer of his day known to perfect the Wonder Shredder, now also known as our kitchen grater amongst you history buffs. To further explore the history of the grater, know that it was actually invented by Issac Cox in the 1540s so hard cheeses could still be used and thereby not left to spoil.

Our cheese grater has been known to serve in the preparation of a variety of foods. They are commonly used to grate cheese and lemon or orange peel and can also be used to grate other soft foods. They are typically used in the preparation of toasted cheese, perfect for our Pyramid Toaster, as well as macaroni and cheese. In Slavic meals, cheese graters are used to grate potatoes for preparation of what is known as draniki, bramborak, and potato babka. In Hawaii and Tahiti, for instance, graters are also used to grate coconut meat. In Jamaica, a coconut grater is used as a traditional musical instrument in the performance of kumina, jonkanoo, and sometimes mento, famous Jamaican dances.

Cheese graters provide the convenience of having freshly grated cheese available for every meal. Even if cheese is a little dry, by grating, it will soften the cheese and make it easier to blend or combine into other foods. In addition to macaroni and cheese, kitchen graters can add colorful cheeses to dull and boring food and recipes such as meatloaf or pasta, too.

The differently sized holes on a cheese grater are used for specific cheeses. Very hard cheeses, such as parmesan or pecorino work best when used with the smallest holes. Medium-textured cheese, such as Monterey jack or cheddar, should be shredded using the larger holes. Semi-soft or soft cheeses should generally not be used with a grater, as they will simply smash against it and clog the holes.

Graters are useful for any small grinding need, and are not only used for cheese. Citrus peel can easily be zested by pressing against the small holes of a cheese grater. Chocolate shavings are also easily made with the tool.

Cheese graters also provide both a handy and efficient way to grate cheeses such as Parmesan, cheddar and Colby so that they can enhance the taste of a variety of foods. A benefit to using a kitchen grater would be to grate cheese well in advance and then store for later use; this keeps the cheese fresh for a longer period of time as opposed to leaving the cheese in a solid state.

Cleaning a cheese grater should be done at once, because any remaining cheese may harden and stick to the holes. Wiping the unsharpened side of the grater with a soapy sponge or cloth will usually remove any remaining grated material. Most graters can be washed in the dishwasher, but read manufacturer’s instructions to get specific guidelines.

You should know that graters contain razor-sharp blades and crevices that easily transform the cheese from chunks or pieces into thin, fresh cuts that can be utilized in recipes and give a person more meal options than with regular chunk cheese alone. The blades are designed to sharply cut the cheese with minimal effort. It is important to keep fingers and skin away from the blades as they slice through the cheese. Cuts and scrapes are common. Slowing down with the grating process as well as carefully following safety tips is important when it comes to using the grater which will then cut down greatly on injuries.
